About Tony
Tony Medina was 21 years old the day he arrived on Death Row. He often describes to people he writes to, exactly what the day looked like and how it felt to get out of the transport van that September day in 1996.
Despite having spent over a quarter of a century in a cage, despite having spent the last 22 years in solitary confinement under inhumane conditions, Tony has remained unbroken. Life in prison is a struggle, life on Death Row is soul destroying, but Tony is a fighter. Tony has fought to be heard by becoming an artist, a poet, a writer and an activist. Tony has never stopped fighting to have is story told.
Tony was born and raised in Houston, Texas, into a large extended family. After coming to Death Row at 21, Tony says that it were his parents and grandparents that kept him grounded as they never turned their backs on him. Though Tony was in and out of trouble as a teen and young adult, he was well on his way to turning his life around before he was convicted for a crime that evidence proves he did not commit.
